In short

A smooth moving day is built in the weeks before it. The preparation is not glamorous, but it is what keeps the day from turning into a scramble.

Here is the short version of how to get ready. For a full countdown, see our moving checklist.

Declutter first

You pay to move every box, so a move is the cheapest time to let go of what you do not use. Sort each room into keep, donate, and toss before you pack a thing.

Measure the big stuff

Confirm that large furniture fits through the new doorways and into the rooms you have planned. It is easier to know now than to find out on the truck.

Handle utilities and address changes

Set up or transfer power, water, internet, and trash at the new home so nothing lapses. File a change of address with USPS about two weeks out.

Get your supplies early

Order boxes and materials, or have us bring them, so you are not packing the night before with grocery bags. We can recommend quantities by home size.

Plan for kids and pets

Moving day is safer and calmer for everyone if young kids and pets spend it with a friend, family member, or sitter, away from the open doors and heavy lifting.

The day before

Pack your first-night box, set aside valuables to carry yourself, defrost the fridge, and confirm parking for the truck at both addresses.

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead should I prepare?expand_more

Start the decluttering and supplies four to six weeks out. The utility and address tasks happen around two weeks before.

What is the most overlooked prep task?expand_more

Utilities at the new home and, in condos, the elevator reservation. Both are easy to forget and annoying to fix on move day.
